The Calm

Life is such a fleeting thing. Just like the wind, it's calm one moment, then wind whips through the air, then again, just as quickly, it calms, stirring just the smallest of branches.
The best we can do, I suppose, is choose which kind of wind we will be.
The gentle breeze that lulls you to sleep on a warm spring day.
The fierce wind of a rain soaked storm.
The troubling calm before the storm. The one that makes you gather your children close and watch the sky with well-founded suspicion.
The disastrous winds that tear small towns apart.
The summer breeze that conjures memories of cookouts and lawn games and playing tag after dark.

I'm not sure you would guess it, but I'd most like to be the warning wind. The one that tells you trouble is brewing. The caution flag that makes your nerves stand on edge and your ears anxious to listen. If this life is so short, let others at least remember that I stirred the calm waters of this world.

  1. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him. - Psalm 103

*From my facebook "about" section. Our days are like grass. I too want to be your kind of wind.

    1. Thanks for that Amy. I love that Psalm, how fitting. I'm glad I'm not alone in my wind choice, too.
