Parenting

I've been trying to read more parenting books. I'm not good at non-fiction reading. I prefer a thrilling crime mystery to a how-to. But I got an overdue notice from our library and so I picked up one of the books that had been sitting on my desk for 3 weeks. Babywise. In an hour's time I became fully aware of my shortcomings as a mother. I am now faced with re-training (which doesn't work well, according to Babywise) or dooming my child to a life of no self-control. Dangit! Why don't they hand these things out in prenatal exams. You know, back when you had time to read about this stuff?!

Phase Take Away the Remote Control starts today.

  1. Babywise is great. I've read every version at every stage with Nora. However, Babywise is not great about grace and God's providence. You have to apply those principals loosely, remembering that no parent or child is perfect and that God gives us grace with every step. Don't be too hard on yourself. It is a great and helpful book, sometimes I don't know what I would've done without it....but it can breed guilt if you let it. Just my two cents. Take it for what it's worth (not much)!! ;)

  2. With the disclaimer that I am not a parent (and thus really should never dole out advice)your daughter is splendid. We will each love as hard as we can, find grace in Jesus for our shortcomings, and mess our children up in ways we will never expect. We will bless them in ways we don't expect too, though. I am all about books. I am reading as much as I can. I also know that the biggest thing I can do for my babe is to say, "Jesus...fill in where I can't." Because he does. And he already is. You're a fantastic mom. I can't wait for the day 25 years down the road when Addie can say that for herself. Until then. Trust me. And trust Him. And read away:). Love you!
