So about this marathon...

Yes, I'm serious. No, I'm not at all prepared. I am in the WORST shape of my life, and I'm talking about doing a marathon. There are a million things that are going to get in the way.  A million excuses. But I'm trying really hard to push past these excuses, because I don't want this to be about me. I want it to be about my mom.

You see, my mom turns 50 this summer. It was almost 2 years ago that I thought she would never see that day. I thought she would never meet her grandkids. I thought she would suffer and whither away and end her life in sadness and doubt. I still worry about most of those things, but I have seen a lot of changes in the last 1 3/4 years. I have seen changes in her life, and my own. I see her struggle to understand why this is God's plan for her. I see her wanting to do things she can't, and not wanting to do things she must.

When people ask about my mom they always ask how much longer she'll be on chemo. And the answer is, probably always. She will probably have chemo every 3 weeks for the rest of her life. My step-dad is always looking for trials to get on, but it's hard to say if she'll be accepted or if the drugs will be approved. We always hope for this.

So when I say this is going to be a rough road, I'm sure it will be, but I'm sure the last 2 years has been far, far worse for my mom. She has had to suffer sickness, weakness, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, sadness, and so much more. The least I can do is run this marathon for her. In honor of her. To celebrate her fight. To celebrate her life. My mom is turning 50 this year and I'm going to make a big stinking deal about it, and I'm going to run for her. You can read more, and maybe even donate if you are able, to my race. I have to raise a minimum of $1500, but I chose a different goal. I hope you'll help me get there.

  1. This is awesome, Ash! Reading the post and the marathon website made me tear up. I believe you can do it! What an amazing way to honor your mom.
